My characters are taking form. This may be weird to hear. You may wonder why I don’t have every little detail of the book already planned. As much as I wish that was my way of working, it’s not. I don’t know if it’s an advantage or a disadvantage, but I like to let things flow.
I have a general idea for the plot, the main things that are going to happen. But since I started writing I’ve felt like it just works better if I let things happen naturally.
When I started I knew things about my protagonists. But not everything. I didn’t know their friends or their families. As I started writing, they just came to me. There was one thing that I had really clear. They weren’t white. It was an easy decision.
I’m Latina and my fiancée is Chinese-American. For me, one of the most interesting things of our relationship is how much we learn from each other because of our difference in culture. It brings its own challenges. It really does. But it also brings such a different perspective and new experiences. I’m not basing the book in my own relationship. But you definitely take things from your own experience to build a fictional story.
